CAUGHT OUR EYE: One-of-a-Kind Packs That Reduce Fabric Waste

What Caught Our Eye

The Del Día Collection from Cotopaxi, a colorful line of backpacks, hip packs, totes and other gear made from 100% deadstock fabric. Every piece is one of a kind, with its own mix of colors chosen by the people who make it.

Why We Noticed

First, just look at them. The unexpected color combinations are kind of the whole point.

But there’s a smart idea behind all that color. Del Día is made using deadstock: high-quality fabric left over from other production runs. Cotopaxi takes that unused material and turns it into something new, with the available fabric helping determine how each piece ultimately looks.

So the same thing that helps reduce fabric waste also gives Del Día its anything-but-cookie-cutter style.

Go On…

Deadstock exists because manufacturing doesn’t always use every yard of fabric produced for a particular run. That can leave perfectly usable material without a destination.

Cotopaxi built Del Día around putting that fabric to use. Rather than requiring specific new fabrics in specific colors, the collection works with what’s available. The people sewing the gear even have a hand in choosing the color combinations, which is why no two Del Día pieces are exactly alike.

It’s a different way to think about leftover material: less like waste, more like a creative constraint.
