BrewBix Gives Brewery Leftovers a Second Life — as Dog Treats

BrewBix brings together two things many of us care deeply about: our dogs and the planet. The UK-based brand takes an intuitive, circular approach by upcycling leftovers from craft brewing — specifically spent grain and brewer’s yeast — and turning them into vegan-friendly dog treats.
The result is a product that’s good for your dog and rooted in reducing food waste — making BrewBix the Seeing Green Solutionist of the Day.

A simple philosophy: easy, better choices
At the core of BrewBix is a simple philosophy: sustainability works best when it’s easy and when the product itself stands on its own. The founder’s view is that people are far more likely to choose sustainable options when those options are just as good as, if not better than, what they are replacing. That belief shows up in BrewBix’s focus on straightforward ingredients, an uncomplicated buying experience and treats designed for everyday use.
Reducing pawprint through ingredients and production
From a production standpoint, BrewBix focuses on reducing impact where it matters. By using brewers’ spent grain and yeast, which still contain significant nutritional value, the company avoids the need to farm additional ingredients. Across the UK, breweries generate roughly half a million tonnes of spent grain each year — material BrewBix helps divert into a second, useful life.
BrewBix’s treats are entirely vegan, a deliberate choice grounded in both environmental and practical considerations. While the brand is clear that dog treats are not meant to provide complete nutrition, it sees no need to include meat in an occasional biscuit. Plant-based ingredients can still be nutritious, and avoiding meat helps reduce the environmental impact associated with animal agriculture. For pet parents participating in moments like Veganuary, BrewBix offers an easy, plant-based swap that extends those values to their furry companions as well.
In addition, BrewBix sources flour and linseed locally to minimize transport emissions, and the biscuits are baked in carbon-neutral wood-fired ovens.
A practical approach to packaging
Packaging is an area BrewBix has thought deeply about. The brand avoids plastic entirely, using recycled cardboard instead, while acknowledging that no packaging solution is perfect. In fact, BrewBix notes that packaging accounts for roughly half of its carbon footprint, reflecting both the energy required to produce it and the limits of recycling systems.
Today, BrewBix packs directly into cardboard, choosing a format that is widely recyclable and familiar to consumers. While alternatives like compostable packaging can still end up in landfill due to confusion or limited infrastructure, cardboard is easier for most households to recycle and can be sourced sustainably through recycled paper or managed forestry.
BrewBix is an example of how sustainability can be embedded into a product from the start — creating treats that dogs enjoy while turning overlooked byproducts into something useful and planet-friendly.
