Spotlight: Avocado

What if creating a healthier, more beautiful home could also help protect the planet?

Meet Avocado, the California-based brand redefining what sustainability looks like in the home — and the Seeing Green Solutionist of the Day for October 4.

Founded in 2016, Avocado began as a small team searching for a comfortable, non-toxic mattress and realizing that “greenwashing” was rampant. When they couldn’t find a genuinely organic option they could trust, they decided to build one themselves — and in the process, to raise the bar for sustainability across the home goods industry.

From Mattress to Lifestyle Brand

Avocado launched during the height of the “mattress-in-a-box” boom but took a radically different path. Rather than chasing convenience, they built their business around quality, transparency, and vertical integration — literally owning their supply chain from “farm to mattress.”

Today, the company’s offerings go far beyond mattresses. Their portfolio includes organic bedding, pillows, and handcrafted furniture, as well as a Zero-Waste Collection made from upcycled wood. There’s even a line for babies and kids (crib mattresses, pajamas) and a new bath and body collection featuring towels, robes, and natural skincare.

It’s all part of a cohesive eco-living vision: healthier homes made from natural, safe materials — and proof that modern luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully.

Why It Matters

The global furniture and mattress market exceeds $750 billion, with more than 18 million mattresses discarded annually in the U.S. alone. Traditional models rely heavily on polyurethane foams, plastics, and chemical flame retardants, releasing harmful VOCs into our homes and creating a massive landfill burden.

Avocado’s response is simple: eliminate toxins and waste from the equation. Their mattresses use GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified cotton and wool, and skip all harmful chemicals — including flame retardants, fiberglass, and PFAS. Each mattress is hand-tufted instead of glued, reducing VOCs and improving indoor air quality.

Proving It, Not Just Saying It

In an industry filled with vague claims, Avocado backs its sustainability commitments with an unmatched list of third-party certifications. They are B Corp, Climate Neutral Certified, 1% for the Planet members, and hold GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, EWG Verified, and Greenguard Gold certifications.

Their Los Angeles factory is both GOTS and GOLS certified and achieves 78% landfill diversion, verified by UL Solutions’ Zero Waste to Landfill program. They even co-own farms and processing facilities in India and Guatemala to ensure fair labor and complete material transparency.

The Bigger Picture

Avocado’s goal isn’t to make products that are merely “less bad” — it’s to model what better looks like. Their vertically integrated approach allows them to guarantee environmental and social responsibility at every stage, from the farms growing their materials to the finished product in your bedroom.

The result: a company showing the world that true sustainability and premium design are not trade-offs, but partners.
