Spotlight: Barnana

Meet Barnana… upcycled, better-for-you snack innovator and the #SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day for August 21.

Barnana is a snack company built around a simple idea: take bananas that would otherwise go to waste and turn them into craveable snacks. On a mission to become the leader in everything sustainable made from bananas, the brand’s products include various sweet or salty chips and bites offerings made from banana, plaintain, cassava, coconut and more.

For Barnana, sustainability is the business model, not a side project. Barnana upcycles millions of pounds of organic, would‑be‑wasted bananas and plaintains from the many smaller, more remote and often Indigenous farms in Latin America struggling to get their produce to market through the long export journey to international markets. By turning these crops into snack products at a local production facility, this core model tackles food waste at the source while giving smallholder growers an additional revenue stream for fruit that traditional export markets reject.

From the beginning, Barnana has sourced its ingredients through direct relationships with smallholder farms, many in the Amazon region. The company’s farm-to-shelf supply chain provides these family-owned farms with a reliable, predictable source of income (paying up to 30% above market prices) while also facilitating their transition to organic certification. This not only reduces food waste but empowers farmers to improve soil health, water quality and biodiversity through regenerative practices. By investing in long-term partnerships, Barnana helps build resilient rural economies and a more equitable food system.

Barnana’s model is good for farmers, good for the brand, good for consumers – and good for the planet.

Barnana snacks are available online at barnana.com and Amazon, in-store at major retailers such as Whole Foods, Target, Kroger, Costco and Sprouts, as well as through delivery services.

Barnana is proud to be a certified B Corp company and member of the Upcycled Food Association.
