Spotlight: POLYWOOD

Meet POLYWOOD®… empowering a more sustainable outdoors and the #SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day for August 25.

POLYWOOD is a trailblazer in outdoor furniture, best known for its durable, low-maintenance pieces made from recycled plastics. Founded on the principles of environmental stewardship and circular design, the company has reimagined classic outdoor styles — from Adirondack chairs to sectionals to dining sets — using its proprietary Genuine POLYWOOD™ lumber.

POLYWOOD’s focus on pushing the envelope of sustainable design begins with addressing “fast furniture” and focusing instead on durability, with every collection reflecting their commitment to durable designs, premium materials and styles that stand the test of trends and time.

At its beginnings, POLYWOOD recognized that America’s recycling infrastructure was rapidly growing but lacked large-scale applications for recycled plastic. Today, with enough plastic to fill a garbage truck flowing into our oceans from rivers and streams every minute all over the world, the brand gives post-consumer and post-industrial high-density polyethylene (HDPE) -- commonly used in milk jugs and detergent bottles -- a second chance as outdoor furniture that’s designed to last a lifetime. Every chair or table can be recycled again and again, and production scraps are fed directly back into the manufacturing cycle.

The company’s zero-waste mindset also means that the post-industrial scrap or materials used in their production -- including glass, packaging, paper, aluminum, shrink wrap, fasteners, fabric, resin, and pallets -- are recycled, reducing their environmental impact.

POLYWOOD’s sustainability ethos goes beyond its own front doors. Their on-site recycling facility now processes plastics sourced not just locally and regionally but globally — actively diverting waste that might otherwise end up in landfills or oceans.

As of 2023, POLYWOOD employs over 1,550 American workers and continues to push the envelope of sustainable manufacturing in the home and garden space.
