Nellie’s Proves a Clean Home Shouldn’t Cost the Planet

Laundry detergent. Dryer sheets. Paper towels. Dish soap.
Most of us reach for these products automatically, use them without much thought and replace them when they run out. Few categories in the home cycle through as much disposable packaging — week in and week out — with as little consideration.
Nellie's has been quietly reimagining that for nearly twenty years: replacing single-use with reusable, plastic-heavy with plastic-free and conventional formulas with cleaner, more concentrated alternatives that actually perform.
That's why they're a Seeing Green Solutionist of the Day.

Named for a Reason
The story starts with a woman named Nellie — the founder's mother — who believed in simple, honest, sustainable choices long before those words showed up on product labels.

In 2006, her son James Roberts honored that legacy by launching Nellie's, a North Vancouver, BC-based cleaning company built around the same values she lived by. What began with a set of dryer balls at the Chicago Housewares Show has grown into a full lineup of household cleaning products, still family-owned, still guided by the same idea: a clean home shouldn't require a mountain of plastic and chemicals to achieve.
Nearly twenty years later, the dryer balls are still one of the brand's top sellers.
A Different Kind of Cleaning Lineup
What makes Nellie's interesting isn't any single product. It's the way the company approaches cleaning from several angles at once.
Some products focus on ingredients, such as formulas free of toxins and phosphates, Leaping Bunny certified, with no synthetic fragrances or harsh additives. Others focus on packaging, using reusable tins and refillable options instead of plastic jugs destined for a recycling bin. Still others are designed to replace disposable household items entirely.

The Laundry Soda is a good example of the ingredient thinking. It's a concentrated powder formula, and concentration matters more than it sounds. Nellie’s believes powder per gram is simply more effective than liquid, which means Nellie's isn't shipping water around the world in a heavy plastic jug. Smaller packaging, lower transport emissions and a formula that holds up in warm or cold water. The same logic applies to the Dishwasher Powder.
The Dish and Laundry Cubes take it a step further: pre-measured, plastic-free, free from PVA and microplastics and packed in a reusable tin that holds 64 doses. No wrapper, no guesswork, no single-use film dissolving in the wash.
The Sustainability Story Isn't Just the Detergent
For decades, many households have tossed dryer sheets into load after load without thinking much about the waste they accumulate. Nellie's Wool Dryerballs are designed to last for years, tumbling through the dryer to separate fabrics for better airflow and faster drying. No synthetic fragrance and no single-use anything.
The same thinking runs through the rest of the lineup.

Swedish Dishcloths offer a washable, reusable alternative to paper towels. Dish Butter replaces another plastic bottle at the kitchen sink with a solid, zero-waste formula and refill options. The Oxygen Brightener steps in for chlorine bleach, brightening fabrics without harsh chemicals. Wrinkle-B-Gone Spray stands in for the iron on lighter loads, skipping the energy draw entirely.
None of these products will transform a household's environmental footprint overnight. That's not really the point.
The point is that many of the most common items we discard every week have better alternatives, and most of them require no extra effort.
Small Swaps, Real Impact
One of the reasons sustainable living can feel overwhelming is the assumption that meaningful change requires a complete lifestyle overhaul.
Nellie's takes the opposite view.

The swaps are practical by design: a dryerball instead of a dryer sheet, a washable dishcloth instead of another roll of paper towels, a concentrated powder instead of a liquid jug, a refillable container instead of another plastic bottle. Small decisions that fit into routines people already have.
Those changes may seem modest on their own. But repeated week after week, year after year, they add up to something real.
